My interview with fantasy author Ella d'Avoine!

Hi, everyone! If you’re reading this, it means (hopefully) you liked what I had

to say in my first article on November first. I’m so happy to have you back!

Now, let’s get into the good stuff.

As the title and headline suggest, this week we’ll be talking about everything

related to Forged in Gold! If you haven’t already, check out the “Books” and

“Explore” pages of my website for even more information about the world

I’ve created, what readers have said about the book, and what I have planned

for the future.

I’ve created, what readers have said about the book, and what I have planned

for the future.

Where oh where to start…At the beginning, of course! Very few people know

this, but Forged in Gold was originally called “Gold, Ash, and Blood” (hence the reason the books in the trilogy are titled Forged in Gold,

Forged in Ashes, and Forged in Blood). I started writing it right around my senior year of high school – possibly even earlier, I can’t remember

– so over five years ago by now! Pretty much all of the major details like the plot, characters, settings, and themes have stayed the same, but

I've probably written around twenty different drafts over the years. And somehow, a few lines from the original draft made it into the final

product!

When I wrote the first draft, I had no plans for a series. Aurelia’s story would end there, and I’d move on to something else. When I decided to

publish almost two years ago, I realized there’s so much more to explore about Aurelia, her story, and her world than I originally thought. It

didn't feel right to end it all with Forged in Gold, so I sat down to plot for the future, and an entire series came to me almost instantly! Not

only did I decide to write a trilogy surrounding Aurelia, but I also came up with ideas for other books in a larger series!

As you’ll see on the “Books” page, finishing the trilogy isn’t the only item on my to-do list. There’s a duology in the works (I won’t be sharing

the titles just yet!) that, while taking place in the same realm as the trilogy, follows an ensemble cast of five new characters from around the

world as they embark on an adventure – an adventure that comes as a direct result of The Golden One Trilogy. I can’t take all the credit for

the duology, though! It wouldn’t exist without my best friend, Nina Ritter, who sat with me for hours while we developed this incredible story

from the ground up. Ni, if you’re reading this, I hope you’re as excited as I am for our brainchild to be shared with the world!

That’s not all, either. Those of you reading this article will be the first to know that there’s A LOT more to come in the future! I won’t say much

to avoid spoilers, but in the queue, we have two prequels, a collection of short stories from around the realm, and one final book that ties

everything together from the prequels to the trilogy to the duology.

There’s something else, too, but it’s top-secret for now. This is all I’ll tell you: it’s an epic romantasy taking place two thousand years after

Aurelia’s time. I actually started writing this way before Aurelia’s story was even a thought in my mind (eighth grade!), but after developing

the series, I figured this one would work perfectly in Aurelia’s realm – almost like an epilogue to the series.

As you can see, I’ve been busy. But enough about what’s to come – let’s talk more about Forged in Gold!

I think I speak for most authors when I say that providing an answer to the question, “What’s your book about?” is never an easy task. My

first response is always, “Do you want the short version or the long version?” In short, Forged in Gold tells the story of a usurped queen who

embarks on a journey across foreign, forbidden lands to find the allies, answers, and assets she needs to reclaim her throne, all while realizing

she has a much larger role to play in the realm. She uncovers secrets about her life and her family that put her in immense danger; overcomes

her culture’s prejudices against civilizations on the other side of the world; and, of course, meets a dashing, charismatic traveler on her quest

who slowly captures her heart.

As for the long version…

The story begins with exactly what you’d expect from a young queen living in a medieval, fantastical realm: Aurelia Brentwood, Queen of

Akkinor, still struggles to earn favor with her people after inheriting the throne five years earlier when her parents were lost at sea. Everyone

and their mother tells her she needs to marry and have children ASAP – because in a male-dominated society, even a queen’s worth is

determined by the man at her side and the amount of heirs she provides. Aurelia steadfastly refuses to comply with the demands of her people,

leading to an uprising and a failed assassination attempt that forces her to flee Akkinor on her own.

In a letter written by her late father, the great King Edmund II, she learns that her journey is taking her to Carthe: the western continent she’s

always been told to avoid because of its lawlessness, barbaric customs, and dangerous people. Oh, yeah – and Carthe is pretty much the only

civilization in the realm where magic is still prevalent after a persecution over a thousand years before Aurelia’s time. Without knowing anything

about Carthe or how to survive there, Aurelia changes her name to Lily Linden (her surname being an ode to her best friend, Ser Linden Elliot),

presents herself as a commoner, and sets out to follow the instructions her father left in his letter: to find a man named Arian Cristos.

The people of Carthe pose as much of a threat as the terrain, but Aurelia finds herself relying on native Carthinians to help her reach her

destination: the kingdom of Taundosa, nicknamed “the City of Gold” because – you guessed it – it’s made almost entirely out of gold. Her

allies show her the side of Carthe that Akkinor has always neglected in favor of focusing on centuries of animosity and prejudice between the

two continents. One of these allies is a handsome, chivalrous Akkinorian native, Jack Sherbourne, who left his homeland behind for a life of

adventure in Carthe. I won’t say too much more about Jack – you’ll have to meet him for yourself to know just how swoon-worthy he is!

The people of Carthe pose as much of a threat as the terrain, but Aurelia finds herself relying on native Carthinians to help her reach her

life of adventure in Carthe. I won’t say too much more about Jack – you’ll have to meet him for yourself to know just how swoon-worthy

he is!

Between dodging assassins sent from Akkinor, getting to know Carthe and its people, and theorizing about the mysterious Arian Cristos,

Aurelia’s dealing with another punch to the gut: in her father’s letter, he told her that he and her mother adopted her from Carthe. Despite

knowing that her people need her on the throne, she can’t help but wonder if it really belongs to her – especially because her people, even the

ones hoping and praying for her return, wouldn’t welcome her home if they knew the truth about her heritage.

When Aurelia (and Jack, of course) finally arrives in Taundosa and meets Arian Cristos, everything changes. She needs Arian’s help to secure allies

in Carthe so she can return home and reclaim her throne, but it’s not an easy task: Carthinians aren’t fond of Akkinorians, either, and the

politicians she needs on her side aren’t easy to sway. I can’t say anything more, though – I’ve spoiled enough as it is!

I’m sure you have plenty of questions by now: Who is Arian Cristos, and why did Edmund tell Aurelia to find him? Who usurped Aurelia’s throne?

Who are her birth parents? How does her quest impact the people of Carthe? What’s happening in Akkinor while she’s away? Where does the

book’s title come from? As much as it pains me to stop here, I can’t keep going without ruining the story for you. You’ll just have to get your

copy to answer those questions for yourself!

I consider Forged in Gold to be something of a prequel to the rest of the series, including Aurelia’s trilogy. Her time in Carthe changes the entire

realm in several ways, so the series as a whole is a direct result of what happens in this book. In the future, we’ll get to explore the rest of the

realm in a lot more detail! Get ready for more magic, pirates, a Viking-inspired culture, and a whole bunch of fantastical creatures! If you want a

sneak peek into the people, places, and cultures I’ll be diving into in future books, the Explore page on my website sums everything up!

So, what can you expect from The Golden One Trilogy in particular? As I’m sure you know by now, Aurelia is pretty much the MVP of her time,

and the entire realm feels the effects of the things she does. But her story isn’t just about battles for power and changing the world – it’s about

the realities of life for a woman in her position in this type of setting. We’ll see quite a bit of Aurelia’s struggle to balance motherhood and her

duties as queen: for one, because even a feminist icon trying to overthrow the patriarchy can choose to experience motherhood; and for

another, because children make their parents vulnerable, and there are plenty of people (aka men) looking for any way to bring down the most

powerful person in the realm. Some view children as a weakness, and others – like Aurelia – consider children to be the strongest, most primal

motivation needed to heal the world before it’s broken beyond repair.

War, refuge, betrayal, secrecy, prophecies, magic, dragons, hope, unity, politics, power – Aurelia’s trilogy, the duology, and the rest of the series

has it all! I can’t promise that this series (and Forged in Gold, for that matter) will be everyone’s cup of tea, but if any of those themes appeal to

you, I urge you to give my book(s) a chance! I truly believe there’s something for everyone in this series, and I really, really can’t wait to have all

TEN books published! It’s going to be a while, but if you stick around, I promise, it’ll be worth the wait!

I think that just about covers it! I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit more about Forged in Gold, The Golden One Trilogy, and my plans for

the future of the series. I’ll be touching on all of this a bit more in the future, especially when it’s almost time to publish Forged in Ashes, but

that’s all for now! If you haven’t already, please order your copy of Forged in Gold on Amazon! Clicking the cover photo below will redirect you

to the Amazon page. You have your choice of paperback, hardcover, or e-book editions!

Be sure to come back on Friday, December sixth, to read my third blog post! I’m holding this article especially close to my heart: I had the

pleasure of interviewing my friend, fellow fantasy author, and the founder of Soleil Writing Agency, the lovely Ella d’Avoine! We talk about

everything from her books to Soleil to her experience as a self-published author. It was such a pleasure to chat with her, and I can’t wait for

all of you to read the wonderful things she had to say.

As always, thank you for taking the time to read today! I appreciate all of you so much. Until next time!

Forged in Ashes, but that’s all for now! If you haven’t already, please order your copy of Forged in Gold on Amazon! Clicking the cover

photo below will redirect you to the Amazon page.

Until next time!

xxx Katie
